The Muhlenberg baseball team staged a remarkable ninth-inning comeback for the second straight home game but wound up losing in 11 to Ursinus, 13-12.
It was the sixth consecutive season that the teams went to extra innings in their annual meeting in Allentown. The Mules walked off with wins in each of the first five.
Muhlenberg opened up a 6-0 lead after two innings but was blanked for the next six and trailed 10-6 when it came to bat in the bottom of the ninth.
After the first batter was retired, sophomore
Steven Dimovski hit a double to deep right-center. Freshman
Danny Cutrupi, who had entered the game in the top of the ninth, followed with a two-run homer to center to make it 10-8.
Another player off the bench, sophomore
Sean Lynch, doubled, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to bring the Mules (10-22, 5-10) to within a run, but down to their last out.
They were down to their last strike when sophomore
Marius Haughton walked on a 3-2 pitch. And they were down to their last strike
again, when Haughton took off on a 2-2 pitch to sophomore
Jason Hughes.
Hughes lined the pitch into center for a clean single, and when the Ursinus center field overran the ball, Haughton came all the way around to score the tying run.
Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the 10th, but the Bears (21-14, 8-7) scored three times in the top of the 11th. After the first two batters in the bottom of the 11th were retired, sophomore
Sean Habeeb drew a walk and Haughton hit his third home run of the season to cut the margin to one.
That would be as close as Muhlenberg would get, however, as the game ended on a strikeout.
Hughes hit a two-run single in the Mules' five-run second. The big inning also featured run-scoring singles from senior
Thomas Pranzo and sophomore
Mike Carcich, who also had an RBI double in the first.
