Men’s Lacrosse Sets Scoring Record on Senior Day

The Muhlenberg (10-6, 5-2) men's lacrosse team surpassed its all-time mark for goals in single game in a 23-5 win over McDaniel (5-11, 0-7) on Senior Day.

A powerful offense was key for the Mules, who got off to an energetic start as freshman Parker Kusko scored Muhlenberg's first goal with an assist from junior Chase Kusko. Less than a minute later, the duo of brothers did it again, giving the Mules a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter. Sophomore Luc Belvill and junior Flynn Decker combined to add three more goals over the next few minutes, giving the hosts a 5-0 lead with 6:49 left. The Green Terror scored with 6:06 left in the first quarter, making the score 5-1 heading into the second.

The second quarter got off to a similar start, as freshman James Janet scored his first career goal less than three minutes in. Muhlenberg kept up its momentum throughout the period, scoring four straight goals and heading into halftime with a 12-2 lead. The Green Terror would then go the entire third quarter without finding the back of the net, while the hosts scored eight times to put the game away for good.

13 different Mules found the back of the net, including Jacob Apat, Brendan Lang, and Mark Ruggiero, who each scored their first career goals.  Senior Justin Wyle, fresh off being honored during the Senior Day festivities, tied his career high of three goals, while P. Kusko set a new personal best with five.

Defense was also a strength for Muhlenberg. McDaniel had three failed clearing attempts in the first, second, and third quarters. The Mules also held them to 10 shots on goal, forced 19 turnovers, and won 26-5 on faceoffs.

The Mules broke their season and all-time scoring records with 23 goals. Prior to this game, their record was 21, which they accomplished against Eastern earlier this season. They also tied their record for most assists in a game with 17.

With the win, the Mules (5-2) extend their winning streak to five and move up to fourth in the Centennial Conference, while McDaniel (7-0) remains at eighth.

Before the game, Muhlenberg honored its six seniors: Wyle, Jace Riley Day, Thomas Olifiers, Michael Drago, Patrick Crawley, and Liam McMunn (all pictured).
