Stymied on offense all day long, the Muhlenberg softball team plated two runs in its final at-bat to defeat Moravian, 2-1, and gain a doubleheader split.
The Greyhounds (8-8), who won 40 games last year and have been to the NCAA Tournament 21 of the last 26 seasons, took the opening game, 4-0.
With the Mules (14-4) trailing 1-0, freshman
Izzy Wilmot led off the bottom of the sixth with a clean single to left. The next batter, junior
Lillie Teague, hit a live drive to first base that went off the glove of the fielder and into foul territory, giving Muhlenberg runners on second and third.Â
After an infield pop for the first out, junior
Leah Grimm hit a ground ball through the hole between first and second to bring in Wilmot with the tying run. One out later, sophomore
Morgan Bobrowski hit one through the hole on the left side of the infield, scoring the go-ahead run.
Moravian got a leadoff single in the top of the seventh and advanced the tying run to second on a sacrifice. The next batter hit a sharp ground ball to third, but Wilmot knocked it down, looked the runner back to second, and threw to first for the second out.
Freshman
Eden Clark finished off Muhlenberg's first home win against Moravian since 2010 by striking out the final hitter looking.Â
Clark had a magnificent day in the circle, coming on in relief in both games and throwing a total of 8.1 innings, allowing only one earned run on three hits and striking out 11.Â
Grimm
(pictured above) was the Mules' offensive star. Coming into the day 0-for-4 on the season, she entered late in the first game and doubled in her first at-bat - one of only three baserunners for Muhlenberg in the game. Rewarded with her first start in the nightcap, she doubled again in the second inning before delivering the tying hit in the sixth.Â
