The Muhlenberg Mules emerged with a split in Saturday's home clash with the previously undefeated Stockton Ospreys, taking the first game 8-1 but falling in the nightcap 3-2.
Game one was a one-sided affair, as the Mules scored in four separate frames as starter
Morgan Bobrowski overwhelmed the visitors. The sophomore allowed just three hits while going the distance (on just 80 pitches) and striking out three. It was a dominant performance throughout; the Osprey's only score came due to a two-out error in the third inning.
It was a team effort throughout at the dish for Muhlenberg, as every batter in the starting lineup reached base safely at least once.
Josie Hoffacker led off the game with a walk, stole second base, and was promptly returned home on an
Izzy Wilmot single.
Scooter Hulsen started the Mules' rally in the second with a single of her own to put a runner on for
Peri Kahn. The sophomore belted a laser into the left-centerfield gap for a double and another run, the first of two extra-base hits for her in the game. The second of those was a ringing triple that rode over the centerfielder and all the way to the wall.
The hosts erased any chance of a comeback in the sixth, when
Lillie Teague came up with a pair of runners on base. The Mules' left fielder smacked a ball over the outstretched glove of the right fielder to clear the bases and extend their lead to 7-1.
The latter half of the twin-bill was dominated by pitching and defense. Stockton struck first, smacking a pair of hits off of Muhlenberg starter
Josie Krieman in the second inning for a 1-0 advantage. The Ospreys then used small ball to tack on another run in their next trip to the plate to go up 2-0. The hosts answered back in the bottom half, turning three straight two-out baserunners into a tally of their own.
From there, the defense of both teams was the story. Stockton added an important insurance run on a two-out error in the sixth that ended up being the difference. With two outs in the seventh, Teague smoked another double and would come around to score on a
Maddy Svenningsen single up the middle. Kahn then added another single, this time through the left side, to put two on with two out, but a flyout ended the Mules' comeback attempt. Despite a fair number of well-hit balls throughout, the Mules couldn't string enough together against the Stockton starter, who tossed all seven innings. The Ospreys also didn't make a single error on the day.
