A cold third quarter was the difference as the Muhlenberg women's basketball fell to Ursinus, 71-62, in its last road game of the season.
The Mules (10-14, 5-9), who finish their season - and the career of longtime head coach
Ron Rohn - at home against McDaniel on Saturday, were eliminated from playoff contention before they took the court due to wins by Washington College and Franklin & Marshall.
Seniors
Katie McGrath (22 points) and
Avery McNulty (11) each scored in double figures for Muhlenberg.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first quarter. The Bears (15-9, 9-5) took a five-point lead early in the second, but the Mules scored the next five points on a three by McGrath
(pictured above) and the first points of the year by sophomore
Ella Parker on a layup off McGrath's steal.
Late in the half, the Mules broke a 28-all tie on a three-point play by McNulty. The extended their lead to as many as seven point on a steal and layup by freshman
Maggie Burns and went into the break with a 38-34 lead.
McGrath extended the lead to 40-34 with a layup 10 seconds into the second half, but that would be the only field goal of the third period for Muhlenberg. The game was tied at 42-all before Ursinus went on a game-changing 15-3 run.
The Mules got as close as six points in the fourth quarter but went down to their fifth straight loss.
Junior
Lyndsey Costigan pulled down 11 rebounds, while sophomore
Veronica Dawson finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds.
