The Muhlenberg women's basketball team had three players reach double figures, but fell 79-54 to Washington College in a critical Centennial Conference contest.
One quarter was just about the difference. After a relatively uneventful first quarter ended at 12-all, the Shorewomen took control of the game in a second period that saw the hosts shoot 61.5% from the field compared to the visitors' 9.1%. While the Mules bounced back offensively over the final 20 minutes, the Shorewomen continued their onslaught with a 30-point third quarter that left no doubt in the result.
Veronica Dawson poured in 17 points while draining five of her seven attempts from beyond the three-point line. It's the fourth time in the last five games that the sophomore has scored 15 points or more.
Avery McNulty had 13 points to go with two blocks and, despite a slow start,
Katie McGrath finished with 11 points and a team season-high seven assists.
The Mules are in a precarious position entering the final week of the Centennial Conference playoff race. At 5-8 in conference play, they sit in eighth in the standings just behind Washington College (6-7) and Franklin & Marshall (6-6 with a game against undefeated Johns Hopkins yet to play today). Muhlenberg does not have the tiebreaker over either of these teams, so the Mules will need to overtake both of them outright. To put it more succinctly, the Mules need to win out while the Shorewomen and the Diplomats lose out; that would put Muhlenberg in sole possession of the sixth and final playoff spot at 7-8.
