Arinze Achufusi drilled a step-back jumper and a pair of free throws in the final minutes to secure the 63-60 win for the Muhlenberg men's basketball team over the visiting Haverford Fords.
Achufusi's step-back mid-range jumpshot came with just over a minute remaining and put the Mules up six points. It was an important shot, as all the momentum was on the visitor's side; the Fords had spent the previous three minutes cutting a nine-point Muhlenberg advantage to just four. That lead dwindled to two under the one-minute mark after a foul and a costly turnover led to four quick points for Haverford. The Mules then relied on Achufusi once more to secure the win at the charity stripe, where the sophomore calmly swished a pair to go up four.
Achufusi finished second on the team in scoring with 12 points, as
Peter Stanton-Shepherd led the way with 14 on 60% from the field.
Jack Woodard also reached double figures with 10 points including a deep three midway through the third quarter.
Early on it was the Mules' outside shooting and willingness to share the ball that garnered them a five-point halftime lead; they went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to start and tallied five assists on their first six baskets. Senior guard
Drew Greene was a driving force behind that, tallying an assist on three of his first four possessions on the court. Junior forward
Gavin D'Iorio was a recipient of a couple of those dimes, making two threes courtesy of Greene's dishes. D'Iorio finished with a season-high nine points on the evening.
The Mules return to .500 in Centennial Conference action with the win and now sit at 3-3.
