Conference Battle Goes to the Garnet

Drew Buck had 21 points, including 14 in the second half, but the Muhlenberg Mules fell 61-59 to the visiting Swarthmore Garnet in a Centennial Conference clash.

After trailing for much of the initial 20 minutes of action, a shaky start to the second half found Muhlenberg down 15 points with 13 minutes to go. The Garnet built that advantage through a mixture of superior three-point shooting and solid work on the offensive glass (a 7-1 first-half offensive rebound differential, 18-9 game differential in favor of Swarthmore), but the Mules were undeterred. Led by Buck, the hosts made inroads into that deficit over the next 10 minutes of game action with a 26-12 run; that gave Muhlenberg its first lead of the game at 55-54. That sprint was fueled by 14 points from the sophomore, who converted two and-one layups and knocked down a pair of threes as well.

Arinze Achufusi, held scoreless for the first 35 minutes, found his shooting stroke over the final five. All six of his points came inside of five minutes remaining, two of them coming on a silky smooth pull-up jumper off of a snatchback that set the crowd of more than 200 present on fire when it hit the twine. From there, the Garnet retook the lead, and some stout defense on the final possession sealed the win for Swarthmore.

Buck not only scored 21 points, but had one of the most complete games of his young career. The guard shot 7-of-12 from the field while adding two blocks and a steal on the other end. Nate Hoffman was the only other Mule to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with 10 points.
