Hot Start Fuels Wire-to-Wire Defeat of Haverford

A blistering start powered the Muhlenberg Mules to a 69-55 victory over the visiting Haverford Fords Wednesday night.

The Mules jumped on the opposition early on, draining threes and penetrating the paint defense over and over again in the first quarter. The latter half of that effort was led by the frontcourt duo of Lyndsey Costigan and Veronica Dawson. That pair had the high-low game working throughout the first half; Dawson lobbed passes just beyond the defenses' reach to a waiting Costigan, who promptly turned and laid it in. That, combined with a barrage from beyond the arc (5-of-7 from three in the first quarter), earned the Mules a 28-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The Fords began to eat into that differential over the course of the second half, taking advantage of a few Mule giveaways to cut it to eight in the third quarter. Despite that, Muhlenberg stayed rock-solid from then on out and never allowed the visitors to creep any closer en route to the win.

Costigan and Linzy Roberson paced Muhlenberg in scoring, each finishing with 17 points on 6-of-8 from the field. Costigan added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season to go with her season-high in scoring. Dawson chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds while Avery McNulty grabbed six boards and swatted four shots.

The win secures the season sweep over Centennial Conference foe Haverford after narrowly defeating the Fords on December 6. Key in both victories was keeping Haverford's leading scorer under wraps. She entered this contest averaging just under 20 points per game, but in her two games against Muhlenberg, she's combined for just 11 points on 2-of-19 from the field.
