Men's Wrestling Scraps Scranton

Competing in Memorial Hall for the first time this season, the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team recorded three pins and three technical falls to defeat Scranton, 36-16.

Junior CJ Horvath recorded his sixth technical fall of the season to open the match, and the Mules trailed 6-5 when senior David Rosenfarb took to the mat at 141. After recording an early takedown, Rosenfarb (pictured above) was reversed, but then reversed his opponent back to take a 4-3 lead. Starting down in the second period, he reversed his opponent into a pin, giving Muhlenberg the lead for good at 11-6.

Freshman Eoghan O'Hara followed with his first career technical fall at 149, and sophomore Charles Levine overcame an early takedown to record his seventh pin of the season at 157.

Scranton recorded a major decision at 165 before the most competitive bout of the match took place at 174. Sophomore Lucas Velando went into the third period trailing 4-1, but after escaping, the notched his first takedown of the bout with 1:07 remaining. His opponent escaped to bring the bout even at 5-5 but was hit with his second stalling warning with 22 seconds left as he backed away from the aggressive Velando. A last-second takedown secured Velando's 9-5 decision.

Junior Nick Stump and senior Ryan Fairchild were dominant at 184 and 197. Stump led 11-0 on the strength of three first-period near-falls before pinning his opponent early in the second period, and Fairchild needed less than a minute to record two takedowns and three near-falls for a tech.

Muhlenberg also went 4-0 in exhibitiion bouts that were more competitive than the matches that counted toward the team score.

Sophomore Joey Lenio, an ROTC member who participated in the pre-match Color Guard presentation on Salute to Service Night, pinned his opponent late in the first period after trading his fatigues for a singlet.

The three other Mules won their exhibition bouts by a total of five points, none more dramatically than sophomore Noah Schlofer, who took his opponent down as the final buzzer sounded for a 20-18 decision. Sophomore Max Rotter won 16-15 on a riding time point, and senior Collin Boldt rode an early takedown to a 5-3 win.
