Four players reached double figures as the Muhlenberg men's basketball team returned to the win column with a 72-60 victory over Centennial Conference foe Washington College.
It was a team effort throughout. The Mules did much of their work in the first half through cuts to the basket, either down the heart of the court or of the backdoor variety. The primary passer on those plays was
Jack Woodard, who racked up five of his six errorless assists over the first 20 minutes. That paired with a stifling defensive effort allowed the hosts to build a 32-23 advantage heading into the break.
Muhlenberg continued its momentum into the second half, extending its lead to double digits a few minutes in. Â The Mules were especially active in the passing lanes over that stretch, reading, deflecting, and intercepting the Shoremen on multiple occasions. Offensively, it was the teams' ball movement that thwarted the Washington College zone and resulted in wide open shots for the Mules.
Elias Sherman-Murphy led the hosts with a season-high 17 points. The junior did much of his work from the free throw line, where he was a perfect 10-for-10.
Peter Stanton-Shepherd (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Woodard (12 points, 12 rebounds) both authored a double-double. Â It's the first time that two Mules have had a double-double in the same game since January 26, 2013, when Brandon Bovino and Kevin Hargrove did so; a span of 4,740 days.
Drew Buck finished with 14 points to round out that scoring quartet while
Nate Hoffman set a career-high with 10 rebounds.
The Mules led for the final 39:04 and never trailed in the win. The victory pushes them above .500 in the conference standings with a 2-1 record.
