Muhlenberg men's basketball lost 74-73 to Centennial Conference foe Swarthmore in an overtime thriller on Wednesday evening.
Drew Buck (21 points),
Peter Stanton-Shepherd (18 points), and
Elias Sherman-Murphy (14 points) led the way for the visitors on offense, claiming responsibility for 53 of their team's 73 tallies. That trio was especially effective down the stretch, combining for all 15 of Muhlenberg's points over the final 9 minutes of action, including overtime.
With the Mules down three after a double-digit Swarthmore comeback, Buck drilled a pair of lengthy threes to retake a 64-61 lead with three minutes remaining. After the Garnet responded with baskets of their own, it was junior Stanton-Shepherd's turn to lace a three, this time coming from the nearside corner.
Muhlenberg went on to have the final shot to win the game in both regulation and overtime, but the Mules were unable to connect on either jumpshot. That was in contrast to their shooting over the rest of the game, as they finished 10-for-21 from three (47.6%).
Another theme of the game was how successful the Garnet were when pressing. The Mules twice built up double-digit leads, but both times were quickly reeled in by the hosts, due in part to turnovers caused by the press. Those turnovers were certainly part of the story of the game, as Swarthmore managed to generate an astounding 22 points off of 14 Muhlenberg giveaways. In comparison, the Mules forced six turnovers, leading to only five points.
Stanton-Shepherd was also effective on the glass, where he led both teams with 10 rebounds in picking up the double-double. The forward was also efficient, finishing 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. He was outdone by Buck, however, who didn't miss any of his four attempts from three and went 7-of-9 overall, including a silky smooth jelly layup with the right hand midway through the second half.
