Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Ariza Leads Men’s Soccer to Sodexo Cup

Daniel Ariza put home a pair of goals as the Muhlenberg Mules downed the visiting Moravian Greyhounds 2-1 in front of a raucous crowd at Varsity Field.

Ariza's first career score came 28 minutes into the contest. Sam Roberts sent a pass from beyond midfield to Omar Lopez, who then chipped a ball to lead Ariza streaking up the right side. The freshman didn't even have to take a touch and fired a one-timer past the goalkeeper. That equalized the game at one, as the Greyhounds opened the scoring 10 minutes earlier with a one-timer goal of their own.

That's where the score remained until Ariza struck again in the second half. Roberts was involved once more, as the junior captain bounced a shot off of the goalie and into the area of Ariza, who then launched a well-placed ball off the bounce into the goal for the go-ahead score.

The fireworks did not stop there, however. This Crosstown Clash was intense and physical throughout, and that culminated in an awkward collision involving Ariza with five minutes to play. The Mules rushed to defend their teammate, and the Greyhound involved was shown a red card once all the extracurriculars had subsided.

This is a rivalry that Muhlenberg has traditionally owned; since 2002, the Mules are 19-0-2 in their 21 meetings. In fact, the last time they didn't win outright was a 1-1 tie on Oct 12, 2016.

Ariza is the first Mules freshman to score multiple times in one game since Chris Richards did so in his first career game. That was on August 30, 2019 in a 4-1 win at Susquehanna.

The women's soccer team will close out this year's Crosstown Clash at home against Moravian on Tuesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. If the Mules can win that, they clinch the 5-0 series sweep over the Greyhounds.
