The Muhlenberg Mules swept the visiting King's Monarchs right out of Memorial Hall with a comeback in the first set and and a 10-point win in a dominant third set.
The most dramatic stretch of the evening came at the end of that first set. After 6-2 run by the visitors that made it 23-19, the Mules locked in, scoring six straight points to claim the victory. Three of those tallies came off the right arm of
Olivia Bruno, who totaled nine kills on a .353 hitting percentage. Her nine putaways were tied with
Christina Marcin for second on the team behind
Abigail Oswari, who had 10.
Marcin got white-hot in the middle of the second set; she was responsible for five straight Muhlenberg points between 14-10 and 16-15. The senior captain had three kills and two aces during that stretch.
The hosts had to overcome a smaller deficit in that second set. Down 22-20, the Mules ripped off a 5-1 run to take home the win. After a Monarch error, Oswari delivered three straight service aces to take a 24-22 lead. King's cut the deficit to one after that, but
Jenny Ryan subsequently slammed the door with a pretty drop shot in the heart of the court.
The Mules excelled throughout, but two specific areas were of note. One was that they exhibited excellent line awareness. There were many times in which a Monarch attack was right next to the line, but Muhlenberg let it go out calmly. The other was from the service line; the Mules recorded their second most aces of the season with 12. Oswari finished with five of those to tie a season high.
Like the kills, the assists were spread nearly evenly among the three setters that played. Ryan and
Maddy Budris finished in a tie for the team lead with 14, while
Ansley Asche was right behind with 12.
Of the 12 matches Muhlenberg has played this season, this is the tenth that has gone only three sets.Â
