Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Seniors Make History

The Muhlenberg field hockey team scored a single goal in each of the first three quarters and evened its record at 3-3 with a 3-0 home shutout of Misericordia.

Seniors Abba Diglio and Erin DiSandro netted the first two goals. It was the 36th career goal for Diglio and the 30th for DiSandro, marking the first time in program history that the Mules have had two active players with at least 30 career goals. Eleven different Muhlenberg players have reached the 30-goal milestone, but this is the first time two teammates have at least 30 goals.

The Mules' third scorer, junior Rachel Hager, is at the opposite end of the scoring spectrum: Her goal just before the end of the third quarter was the first of her career.

Muhlenberg converted on its first two penalty corners to take a 2-0 lead. Less than three minutes into the game, Diglio knocked in a rebound on the Mules' third shot off the corner, after one shot by sophomore Danielle Kapsak was saved and a follow-up by junior Maya Schlegel was saved.

In the second quarter, senior Lily Botta took the insertion from sophomore Haley Foster and passed to DiSandro on her left. DiSandro settled the ball and fired it into the back of the cage for her fifth goal of the season.

Diglio set up the last goal, dribbling through the Cougar defense before passing it off to Hager (pictured above), who tipped the ball in at the post with just 8.5 seconds showing on the third-quarter clock.

The Muhlenberg defense was outstanding through the first three quarters, allowing only two shots - both saved by junior Maddie Schwartz - and no penalty corners. Misericordia (4-2) put on some pressure in the fourth quarter, but freshman Brenna Fitzpatrick made three saves in quick success off a corner with just over six minutes remaining to preserve the Mules second shutout of the season.
