On a night when he made history by helping others score goals, Muhlenberg men's lacrosse sophomore
Chase Kusko ended the game by scoring one of his own.
Kusko's goal 2:14 into the second overtime period gave the Mules (6-7, 2-2) a thrilling 16-15 win at Haverford, a team that is receiving votes in the Division III poll.
The overtime winner capped a comeback from a five-goal deficit. After coming from five goals down to win a Centennial Conference game only once since joining the league in 2003, Muhlenberg has now done it in back-to-back games.
Kusko's lone goal of the game complemented his six assists. He not only tied the school record for assists in a game for the second time this season, but he also broke the school record for assists in a season, which had been 32. With four games remaining in the regular season, Kusko has 37 assists.
The Mules trailed 8-3 early in the second period but closed the gap to 10-8 by halftime, then held the Fords (8-5, 1-4) scoreless in the third period, taking an 11-10 advantage into the final quarter.
Haverford regained the lead by netting the first three goals of the fourth quarter and was up 15-13 heading into the final minute. The Fords took possession of the ball after a pair of missed Muhlenberg shots, but sophomore
Peter Boyd forced a turnover on the clear attempt, and Kusko fed junior
Thomas Olifiers in transition for his first career goal with 44.5 seconds left.
Senior
Griffin Minuto won the ensuing faceoff - one of his career-high 20 faceoff wins. With the seconds ticking down, sophomore
Daniel Friedel faked a shot, slipped past his defender, and then ripped one into the back of the net to tie the score with just 7.4 ticks showing.
Muhlenberg dominated the first overtime, holding Haverford without an offensive possession and hitting the post twice.
The Fords did take a shot in the second extra period but could not control the ball off the rebound. Olifiers
(pictured above)Â picked up the ground ball, and the Mules set up their offense. With 1:46 on the clock, Kusko curled in from behind the cage, took a pass from senior
Tyler Kitchen, turned and fired for his second career overtime goal. The win was Muhlenberg's first in a multiple-overtime CC game since 2009.
Friedel and sophomore
Liam Ledwith, the reigning CC player of the week, each scored three goals, while Kitchen netted two.Â
Junior
Max Kunnath was instrumental in the comeback effort, making 13 saves, including 12 in the final three periods of regulation.
Senior
Matthew Hochegger picked up six ground balls, including the 100th of his career, forced a pair of turnovers, and recorded an assist. Â
