Pitching Carries Baseball to Win

Three pitchers combined on a four-hitter as the Muhlenberg baseball team completed its first season sweep of Dickinson since 2019 with a 7-3 win at Coca-Cola Park.

Senior Brendan Hughes, sophomore Charlie Siper and senior Ethan Brochin didn't allow an earned run as the Mules (13-10, 3-1) matched their Centennial Conference win total from all last season.

Hughes pitched into the fifth, retiring seven straight hitters after the only two hits he allowed brought in three unearned runs in the second. He left after hitting the first batter in the fifth and walking the second. Siper (pictured above) walked the second batter he faced to load the bases but escaped the jam with a 4-6-3 double play.

Brochin, appearing in his third straight game, tossed a scoreless ninth to nail down the win.

Freshman Sean Habeeb, whose error in the second led to the unearned runs, redeemed himself in the bottom of the inning by hitting a two-out, two-run single.

Graduate student Jack Kent put the Muhlenberg ahead to stay with a two-run double in the fourth.

The Mules held on to their tenuous 4-3 lead through the eighth inning, with the Red Devils (9-12, 0-4) stranding the tying run in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and eighth.

Muhlenberg finally gave itself some breathing room in the bottom of the eighth on consecutive run-scoring two-out hits by freshman Salvatore Cifalino (double), sophomore Marc Quarrie (single) and Hughes (double).

Quarrie scored his 40th run of the season on the double by Hughes, becoming the first Mule since 2013 to touch home 40 times in a season.

Habeeb finished 2-for-3 with three of Muhlenberg's six stolen bases. Senior Aidan Legner had a pair of hits and scored twice.
