Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Hopkins to Limit

The Muhlenberg baseball team gave Johns Hopkins, the fourth-ranked team in Division III, all it could handle, dropping both ends of a doubleheader by a combined three runs.

In the opener, the Blue Jays (23-3, 4-1) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to break a 1-1 tie and win, 3-1. The Mules (13-12, 3-3) held a 7-3 lead in the eighth inning of the nightcap, but Johns Hopkins pulled out the win with four in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Junior Thomas Pranzo became the second Muhlenberg player this season to homer in both ends of a doubleheader, going deep for the Mules' lone run in Game 1 and hitting a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning of Game 2. It was the second grand slam of the season for Pranzo, who is only the second player in program history with two slams in the same season. Pranzo's two slams also tie the Mules' career mark.

Sophomore Marc Quarrie, who also has hit two grand slams, blasted his ninth home run of the season in the first inning and was walked intentionally prior to Pranzo's slam. He went 5-for-8 in the two games, drawing two intentional passes.

Graduate student Jack Kent hit two run-scoring doubles in the nightcap.

Muhlenberg received outstanding starting pitching from freshman Shane Ohl and sophomore Luke Foley against a potent Hopkins offense that leads Division III in home runs. Ohl (pictured above) pitched into the seventh inning in his first career start, allowing only four hits.

Foley worked into the eighth for the first time in his career in the second game, allowing only three runs through the first seven.
