The Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team nearly pulled off a major upset, taking seventh-ranked Gettysburg to overtime before falling, 10-9.
The Mules (4-7, 0-2) scored the first three goals of the game and did not trail until 10:28 remained in the fourth quarter, when the Bullets (6-2, 2-0) took an 8-7 advantage.
Muhlenberg responded with goals from senior
Tyler Kitchen and sophomore
Chase Kusko to reclaim the lead. Gettysburg tied it back up with 5:53 left in regulation, and neither team broke the tie before the fourth period expired.
The Bullets won the opening faceoff of overtime and scored the winner with 49 seconds elapsed.
The Mules won only three faceoffs and defended for much of the game. Gettysburg had a 50-23 advantage in shots, but less than half of the shots were on goal, and junior
Max Kunnath made a career-high 14 saves.
Defensive middies
Thomas Olifiers and
Matthew Hochegger (pictured above) combined for five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers, while senior
Brendan Lavarra caused two turnovers to move into a tie for third on the program's all-time list with 52 for his career.
Muhlenberg's early lead was built by two players who scored their first career goal sandwiched around the first of two goals by sophomore
Charlie Falk. Sophomore longstick
Brendan Boyd whipped in his first goal in transition just 22 seconds after the opening face, and freshman
Ryan Schmitz made it 3-0 by scoring off a beautiful spin move in front of the goalie.
Kusko finished with five points on two goals and three assists, including one to sophomore
Jack Bill just before the possession clock expired to give the Mules a 6-4 lead in the third. The three assists gave Kusko 26 for the season, tied for the third-most in program history.
