A 10-0 run early and a 13-0 run late accounted for the difference as the Muhlenberg women's basketball team opened Centennial Conference play with a 72-49 win against Bryn Mawr.
Freshman
Linzy Roberson outscored the Owls by herself in the first quarter, 8-7, and finished with a career-high 21 points. Senior
Avery McNulty notched her second double-double in as many nights, with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while senior
Katie McGrath contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Bryn Mawr (4-5, 0-1) scored the first four points of the game, but Muhlenberg responded with the next 10 to take the lead for good. Four of the points came on steals and layups by Roberson, who added another steal and layup later in the quarter.
The Mules (4-5, 1-0) wrapped an 11-0 run, featuring five points from McNulty and four from junior
Lyndsey Costigan, around halftime to open up a 32-16 lead. The Owls hung around, though, and were within five points early in the fourth quarter before back-to-back Roberson threes, one off a behind-the-back pass from McGrath, extended the lead back to double digits.
The spread was 59-49 before Muhlenberg ended the game on a 13-0 run.
Roberson, who added 6 assists and a pair of blocks, became the first Mule first-year player to score 21 points in the ninth game of her career since ... last year's Bryn Mawr game, almost exactly a year ago, when
Veronica Dawson accomplished the feat.
Muhlenberg, which is 22-10 all-time in CC openers, has never lost to Bryn Mawr in 56 all-time meetings.
