The five teams in contention for the top spot compiled an astounding record of
59-1-1 against Centennial Conference competition in their championship seasons. In chronological order:
Women Soccer 2001
After starting the season 2-2, with losses to two nationally ranked opponents, the Mules reeled off 17 straight wins, sweeping through all 10 Centennial Conference matches. Muhlenberg then shut out Franklin & Marshall and Johns Hopkins in the first CC tournament to capture its second straight title. The Mules toppled Elizabethtown in their first NCAA Tournament game before losing to defending national champion TCNJ in the round of 16.
Muhlenberg finished with a record of 19-3 and ranked 18th in Division III. The 19 wins tie the most ever by a Mule soccer team and stood as a CC record for 10 years. The 17-game winning streak was the longest by any Muhlenberg squad in the 2000s, surpassed in College athletic history only by a 20-game run by the 1991 softball team, and is still the second-longest in CC history. The Mules outscored their opponents 50-19 and set a still-standing school record with 12 shutouts.
Women's Track and Field 2005
At the 2005 Centennial Conference Indoor Championships, Muhlenberg took a half-point lead into the final event before settling for second place by 2½ points. Considering the closeness of that meet and the previous two outdoor championships (both won by Gettysburg by a total of five points), there was every reason to expect that the CC Outdoor Championships would go down to the wire.
But Muhlenberg ran a near-perfect meet at Scotty Wood Stadium, placing an athlete in the top three in 15 of 21 events and in the top six in all events, to unseat Gettysburg by a whopping 33½ points. The conference title was the first for the Mules in track and field since 1944, and it came just three years after they finished seventh at the same meet. The team broke or tied 11 school records (three of which still stand) during the meet and had NCAA provisional-qualifying performances by four different athletes. The final medal total was five golds (a school record that has been tied but not beaten), eight silvers and three bronzes.
Women's Basketball 2008-09
This is the 1972 Miami Dolphins of Centennial Conference women's basketball - still the only team in league history to go through the conference regular season and postseason undefeated. Muhlenberg finished first by seven games in the regular season and breezed to its fifth CC title, defeating McDaniel by 16 points and Johns Hopkins by 21 in the CC playoffs.
The Mules' reward for their perfect season? A trip to Bowdoin, which was 31-0 all-time in postseason home games. But after knocking off Westfield State in its NCAA Tournament opener, Muhlenberg ended the streak with a 58-57 win against the hosts in the second round to reach the "Sweet 16" for the first time ever. The Mules ended the season with a 26-4 record, tying the school and CC record for wins in a season, and were ranked 14th in the final D3hoops.com poll.
Men's Soccer 2014
With a team that was picked sixth in the Centennial Conference preseason poll after graduating six senior starters from the previous season, Muhlenberg went 7-1-1 in the CC to finish in second place in the regular season. The Mules captured their first CC title since 2005 with 1-0 playoff wins against Dickinson and Haverford and earned the right to host NCAA Tournament games for two straight weekends.
Muhlenberg advanced past the first weekend with a 4-0 defeat of Baruch and a shootout win against Catholic. In the "Sweet 16," the Mules were knocked out by eventual national champion Tufts. The Mules outscored their opponents 40-13, ending with a record of 15-2-3 (the fewest losses in a season for the program since 1995) and a final national ranking of 14th.
Football 2019
Unlike some of the teams on this list, the Mule football team had high expectations heading into the 2019 season after reaching the NCAA quarterfinals in 2018 and returning 11 All-Centennial Conference players. And the Mules didn't disappoint. They won their first 13 games, advanced to the national semifinals - a first for a Muhlenberg team since 1995 - and were ranked fifth and seventh in Division III in the two major final polls.
Muhlenberg had only one close call during the regular season, needing a fourth-down stop in overtime to outlast Susquehanna, 24-17. The Mules outscored their first three NCAA Tournament opponents by a margin of 104-8, becoming the first team in the history of the Division III playoffs to record shutouts in the first two rounds. The run ended at home at the hands of eventual national champion North Central. For the season, the Mules outscored their opponents by an average of more than 26 points per game.
