Playing on the first of back-to-back nights in Memorial Hall, the Muhlenberg women's basketball team fell to Misericordia, 60-54 in overtime.
The Mules (3-5) led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter but gave up the tying basket with 8.4 seconds left in regulation and were outscored 14-8 in the extra period. It was their first home overtime loss to a non-conference opponent in 32 years.
The result spoiled a monster game by senior
Avery McNulty, who set career highs in points (18), rebounds (12) and steals (5) in addition to blocking three shots.
Sophomore
Veronica Dawson (pictured above) also scored in double figures, with 10 points, while junior
Lyndsey Costigan finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds.
McNulty scored all 10 of Muhlenberg's points in the second quarter, which ended with the Cougars (3-4) holding a 25-24 lead. It was 30-28 before the Mules went on a 12-0 run, highlighted by a pair of baskets from sophomore
Caitlyn D'Addieco and threes from McNulty and junior
Emma Altmire.
Muhlenberg made only one field goal in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, however, allowing Misericordia to draw even at 44-all. Freshman
Linzy Roberson, making her first career start, finished a give-and-go with Costigan with 2:44 left to give the Mules a 46-44 lead, but they did not score again in regulation.
The Cougars never trailed in the extra period, shooting 4-of-5 from the field.
