Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Posts Gritty Win vs. DeSales

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team led almost the entire way, but never comfortably, and pulled out a tough 62-59 win against Lehigh Valley rival DeSales.

It was the third straight win for the Mules (4-2) and their first at Memorial Hall against the Bulldogs (2-3) in 11 years.

DeSales scored the first two points of the game and led only two other times - at 15-14 and 17-16. Muhlenberg never led by more than five points until the final 13 seconds, standing tall every time the Bulldogs made a bid to reclaim the lead.

The Mules held DeSales to 30.6-percent shooting and only six field goals in a second half marred by a combined 32 foul calls.

The Bulldogs tied the game for the final time at 48-48 near the five-minute mark before back-to-back baskets by sophomore Jack Woodard - a three and a long two - gave Muhlenberg a five-point lead.

DeSales closed to within one, 55-54, with 1:17 remaining by making the second of two free throws, but the Mules beat the press and got a quick basket, with Woodard converting a pass from sophomore Arinze Achufusi

Two free throws apiece by sophomore Drew Buck and junior Peter Stanton-Shepherd gave Muhlenberg its biggest lead, 61-55, with 13.0 ticks on the clock. Woodard made a free throw with 6.6 seconds showing to make it 62-57.

The Bulldogs drove in for a quick basket, then forced a turnover to get the ball back with 1.2 seconds left. A last-second three-pointer drew iron but did not go in, and the Mules had their win.

Woodard led Muhlenberg with a career-high 15 points, while Stanton-Shepherd finished with 11. Senior Drew Greene (pictured above) contributed 8 points and tied his career high with 6 assists.
