Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Comes Back for Third Win

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team came back from a 13-point first-half deficit, ending the game on an 11-0 run to defeat King's, 65-61, for its second win in a row.

Appropriately, it was Arinze Achufusi who scored the game-winning basket on a putback with 30.5 seconds remaining. The sophomore, who missed the first four games of the season with injury, proved to be ready to return to action, finishing with a career-high 23 points to top his rookie year best of 15.

The Mules (3-2) played from behind for the vast majority of the game. The Monarchs (1-4) took a 4-2 lead less than two minutes in, and Muhlenberg never caught up until Achufusi's short jumper tied the game at 61-all with 1:10 to play.

King's led 30-17 in the first half, 40-30 at halftime and 45-34 early in the second half. Three-pointers by junior Peter Stanton-Shepherd and senior Matt Lee, sandwiched around a bucket by sophomore Drew Buck, accounted for an 8-0 run that brought the Mules within three at 45-42.

Muhlenberg cut the gap to three on three other occasions in the second half, but could not get over that hump until the very end.

King's made one of two free throws to take a 61-54 advantage with 4:27 remaining and did not score again. Consecutive baskets by Greene and Buck reduced the margin to three yet again, and Greene made the second of two free throws with 1:59 left to finally get the Mules within two.

Greene grabbed the rebound after a King's miss, leading to Achufusi's tying hoop. After King's missed the front end of a one-and-one, Achufusi put the Mules ahead for the first time in the game.

The Monarchs were called for traveling with 19.4 ticks left, but junior Liam Gorman missed the front end of a one-and-one. After King's tried a three-pointer that went in and out in the closing seconds, Gorman grabbed the rebound, and this time made both ends of the one-and-one to ice the game.

Greene went 5-for-5 from the field and finished with 11 points, while Stanton-Shepherd (pictured above) ended with nine points and eight rebounds. Buck also scored nine points.

Lee grabbed a career-high seven rebounds to go along with five points.

Muhlenberg held King's to 33.3-percent shooting in the second half, down from 46.9 percent in the first half.
