The Muhlenberg men's basketball team held Waynesburg to just 22.6% shooting and led nearly wire-to-wire in its 67-43 defeat of the Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon.
The rout started early on, as the Mules held the hosts to only five points over the game's first 12 minutes in taking a 21-5 advantage. That stifling defense would continue for the entirety of the half; Waynesburg finished the period with just 15 points on 17.9% from the field. There were many times in which a Muhlenberg player dove into the stands or on the floor to recover a loose ball. That hustle also showed on the glass, where the Mules limited the Yellow Jackets to only one shot during most possessions. 5-foot-10
Drew Greene was the poster child for this, as there were a few times where the senior disappeared amongst the trees only to emerge with the ball seconds later. That translated into a game-high four offensive boards.
Muhlenberg faced a zone early in the second half but quickly forced Waynesburg out of it with effective cuts and persistent ball movement. The visitors kept a 20-point halftime advantage throughout the rest of the game despite being on the wrong side of a 5-22 free throw differential.
The Mules received contributions from up and down their lineup, including 32 points from the bench. Despite an off-shooting game,
Peter Stanton-Shepherd was pivotal to their defensive efforts. The junior forward had eight rebounds in the first half, including seven during the opening 21-5 run. He would go on to finish with a game-high 12 in just 21 minutes of action.
Sophomore guard
Drew Buck poured in 14 points to lead the Mules in scoring, while
Jack Woodard (13 points) and
Nate Hoffman (10 points) also reached double figures. Freshman guard
Justin Buck nailed a three-pointer in the final minutes for his first collegiate points.
