Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Throws Scare into 13th-Ranked Dickinson

The Muhlenberg field hockey team took a halftime lead and was even with 13th-ranked Dickinson with less than five minutes to play before eventually falling, 4-2.

The Red Devils (14-1, 6-1) came in as one of the top defensive teams in Division III, having allowed only seven goals all season. The only previous team to score multiple goals against Dickinson was second-ranked Johns Hopkins in a 3-0 game.

Muhlenberg took the early lead, however, when sophomore Danielle Kapsak and senior Erin DiSandro teamed up to score off a penalty corner in a play that was similar to the one the duo executed against Gettysburg on Saturday. DiSandro took the insertion from sophomore Haley Foster, passed to Kapsak on her right, then cut towards the goal, took a return pass from Kapsak and fired the ball into the cage.

The goal, which came with 12:12 left in the first half, was the 10th of the season for DiSandro and the 35th of her career. She now ranks fifth in program history with 89 career points and is the first Mule to reach double figures in goals in three straight seasons since all-time leading scorer Kristen Bruschi did from 2002 to 2004.

The 1-0 lead stood up until halftime and through almost the entire third quarter, but Dickinson drew even off a penalty corner after time expired in the third and took its first lead on a penalty stroke 5:24 into the fourth.

Just when it looked like the Devils had taken over the game, the Mules (5-10, 1-6) came right back to tie the score less than two minutes later.

The tying goal came after sophomore Kate Lysaght tackled the ball away from a Dickinson player near midfield, dribbled into the circle and passed ahead. The ball eventually came to senior Abba Diglio, who shot it in at close range for her ninth goal of the season. She is now in sole possession of third place on the Mules' all-time scoring list with 97 points.

Dickinson put tremendous pressure on the Mules in the second half, taking 17 shots and winning 14 penalty corners. Freshman Brenna Fitzpatrick (pictured above) made 13 saves in her first career start, but the Red Devils finally broke the tie with 2:42 to play and added an insurance goal in the last 20 seconds.
