Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Pulls Away Late

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team closed with an 11-3 run to snap a five-game skid with a 62-56 win at Washington College.

The Mules (4-8, 3-2) had a big advantage inside, shooting 27 free throws to just 11 for the Shoremen (3-9, 1-4) and rolling up a 45-32 edge on the boards, including 16 offensive rebounds.

Leading the way inside was senior Brandon Goldberg, who recorded his fourth straight double-double with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Goldberg made only one field goal but went 13-of-17 from the foul line. The free throws made and attempted were the most by a Muhlenberg player in a regulation game since 2013.

Freshman Peter Stanton-Shepherd had the biggest game of his career, notching highs in points (15), rebounds (8) and blocked shots (3) and making big plays at both ends of the court down the stretch. Senior Giovanni Rubino finished with 14 points.

The Mules scored the first seven points of the game but could never pull away. The game seesawed between a two-point Washington lead and a tie for a span of three minutes late in the second half as the teams traded baskets.

The Shoremen led 53-51 before junior Jayson Williams-Johnson drove in for a tying layup with 3:22 remaining. After the Shoremen missed a shot on their end, Stanton-Shepherd swished a baseline jumper with 2:35 left to give Muhlenberg the lead for good.

Stanton-Shepherd blocked a shot on the ensuing Washington possession. Rubino collected the rebound and made two free throws after getting fouled on a drive to the basket, making it 57-53 with less than two minutes remaining.

Another block by Stanton-Shepherd set up the first of three straight free throws by Goldberg that put the game away.

Junior Luke Gordos (pictured above), returning from injury to play for the first time in more than a month, came off the bench to contribute 4 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
