Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Completes Sweep

The Muhlenberg women's basketball team broke away in the second half to complete a season sweep of Ursinus with a big 56-36 home win.

The Mules (10-7, 5-7), who reached double digits in victories for the 31st consecutive season, are in the middle of a logjam of five teams separated by one game in fourth through eighth place in the Centennial Conference standings. They have swept one of the other teams and play each of the other three - Washington, Swarthmore and McDaniel - at home before the end of the regular season.

When Muhlenberg and Ursinus met in December, the Mules needed a last-second basket to eke out a 50-49 win. This one wasn't nearly as close; in fact, the 20-point margin of victory was Muhlenberg's largest against the Bears in six years.

Junior Ava Connolly led all scorers with 17 points, while junior Rachel Saxton added 10.

Sophomore Avery McNulty (9 points, 7 rebounds), senior Caroline Horst (6 points, 6 rebounds) and junior Jenna Stockfeder (2 points, 9 rebounds) combined for 17 points and 22 rebounds, and on defense they also combined to hold the Bears' All-CC center, who went for 28 points and 12 rebounds in the December meeting, to 13 points and 6 boards.

Another big difference between the two games was in the Mules' ball-handling. They committed 19 turnovers in the first meeting but only a season-low five in this one.

Muhlenberg trailed 15-14 midway through the second quarter before going 4-for-5 from three-point range in a four-minute span to take a 30-23 lead. The last two of the threes came from junior Emily Unger, who reached and then surpassed the career milestone of 100 career three-pointers. Unger (pictured above) is the eighth player in program history to reach triple digits in threes.

The Bears (10-7, 6-6) made a field goal on their first possession of the third quarter but made only three more for the rest of the half.

It was 30-27 midway through the third before back-to-back threes by McNulty kicked off an 18-0 run that extended Muhlenberg's lead to a commanding 21 points with a little more than six minutes left in the game. The Mules forced six turnovers in the Bears' nine-plus-minute scoring drought.
