Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rubino Scores 1000th in Big Win

A milestone night for one of its players was topped by a huge road win for the Muhlenberg men's basketball team.

Senior Giovanni Rubino scored 20 points, including the 1000th of his career, as the Mules (6-10, 5-4) pulled out a 75-72 win at Ursinus. At the halfway point of the Centennial Conference season, the Mules sit solidly in fifth place with wins against each of the five teams below them in the standings, three of them on the road.

Needing 17 points to reach the coveted milestone, Rubino had an unusual game. He didn't miss on any of his field goal tries in the first half, going 5-for-5 en route to scoring 14 points. But he didn't make any field goals in the second half, scoring all six of his points from the line.

His 1000th point came on the first of two free throws with 5:47 left in the second half and tied the game at 61-all. Rubino is the 38th player in program history to reach quadruple digits in points, and he did it only 66 games.

Rubino (pictured above) made the second free throw for point 1001, giving Muhlenberg the lead, and the teams seesawed back and forth until the Bears (7-9, 3-6) went up 68-67 with 3:33 left.

On the ensuing possession, junior Luke Gordos hit a three from the corner to put the Mules ahead for good, 70-68. Another corner three, from freshman Peter Stanton-Shepherd, made it 73-69 with 2:35 remaining.

The score remained that way until Ursinus drew to within one on a three in the final minute. Muhlenberg committed a shot clock violation on the next possession, giving the Bears the ball with 9.4 seconds remaining. A potential game-winning three was off the mark, and Rubino - appropriately - grabbed the rebound and made two clinching free throws with three-tenths of a second left.

The Mules, who led by as many as 13 points in the first half, shot 50 percent from three-point range and put all five starters in double figures for the first time this season. Junior Jayson Williams-Johnson finished with 13 points, Stanton-Shepherd and Gordos scored 12 apiece, and senior Brandon Goldberg contributed 11 points and 9 rebounds.
