The Muhlenberg men's wrestling team opened its Centennial Conference dual season with a thrilling 22-21 win at Gettysburg.
The Mules (6-2, 1-0) also defeated Oneonta, 27-14, in their first match of the day.
Muhlenberg trailed the Bullets, 10-0, after two matches before freshman
Tyson Derenberger recorded a major decision at 174. That started a string of five straight wins for the Mules - a major by sophomore
Ryan Fairchild at 184, a pin by junior
Paul Parise at 197, a decision by junior
Andrew Franklin at 285 and a pin by senior
Joey Lamparelli at 125. Parise's pin came against the CC third-place finisher at 285 last year.
The five wins gave the Mules a 22-10 lead after they had a team point deducted. That opened the door for the Bullets to have a chance to tie the match after decisions at 133 and 141 made it 22-16. Needing a pin, Gettysburg got a technical fall, and Muhlenberg escaped with the one-point win.
The Mules won the first four bouts against Oneonta, with Lamparelli
(pictured above) recording his sixth technical fall of the season to move to within one of the school record. Franklin won a decision as part of a 2-0 day, and freshmen
Andrew Loniewski and
Nick Stump both won by fall.
