The Muhlenberg softball team pounded out a season-high 19 hits, including seven for extra bases, in a 13-2 win at DeSales in the first game of a doubleheader. DeSales came back to win the second game, 4-1.
After being retired without scoring a run in the first inning of the opener, the Mules (12-10) scored multiple runs in each of the next four innings. Sophomore
Kaya Mahy hit a two-run homer in the third, and junior
Samantha Winegard belted a two-run round-tripper in the next inning.
Mahy
(pictured above left) finished 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a single to go along with her second career home run. The 4 hits tied a school record, while her 4 runs scored and 3 extra-base hits were both one short of school records. Mahy is the first Muhlenberg player in nine years to score 4 runs in a game, and the second Mule this season with 3 extra-base hits in a game.
Senior
Sara Fallon also scored 4 runs and went 3-for-4 with a double. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Buurman hit a pair of doubles.
Muhlenberg took advantage of DeSales errors to score five runs in the second inning, capped by Buurman's RBI double. Mahy's home run off the scoreboard in left-center made it 7-0 in the third, and Winegard
(pictured above right) extended the lead to 9-0 with her second four-bagger of the season.
Junior
Sabrina Reichelt added an RBI single in the fourth with her second hit of the game, and junior
Dara DiMaiolo hit a two-run pinch-single in the fifth.
Junior
Raya Kunes tossed three scoreless innings to pick up the win.
The bats were quieted in the second game as the Bulldogs (15-7) gained the split. The Mules managed only three hits, scoring their lone run in the fifth on an RBI single by Mahy.
