Women's Lax Picks Up First CC Win

The Muhlenberg women's lacrosse team made a successful return home, defeating Bryn Mawr 14-8 for its first Centennial Conference win of the season.

Playing at Scotty Wood Stadium for the first time in 27 days, the Mules (8-2, 1-2) scored all their goals in the first three quarters against the Division III leader in save percentage. The 14 goals were the most allowed all season by the Owls (5-5, 0-3), who came in ranked eighth in Division III in scoring defense.

Three players recorded hat tricks, led by freshman Ava Milia, who scored a career-high 6 points on 4 goals and 2 assists. Senior Emily Gaffney netted 4 goals and senior Samantha Eynon added 3.

Bryn Mawr scored the first goal in each of the four quarters. After falling behind 1-0 just 30 seconds into the game, Muhlenberg responded 35 seconds later, with Eynon converting a free-position shot.

Four different players scored goals in the first quarter for the Mules, who led 5-1 after 15 minutes. Bryn Mawr was tied at the end of the first quarter in its first two CC games (against McDaniel and Dickinson).

Back-to-back goals by Milia capped a 4-0 run in the second quarter that extended the lead to 9-2. Gaffney put the Mules in double digits with 1:03 left in the half with a nifty move, faking a pass to her left as she approached the goal in transition and instead shooting the ball in.

Gaffney scored back-to-back goals off assists from junior Lily Seifert in the third quarter to help Muhlenberg build its lead to 14-4 before Bryn Mawr netted the last four goals of the game.

Senior Sarah Duffy led the defense with 4 ground balls, tying her career high. Sophomore Emily Vaughan filled the stat sheet with 5 draw controls, 3 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers, a goal and an assist.

Freshman Meaghan Haughney played most of the second half in goal and made 5 saves, including one in which she recovered quickly from outside the crease to rob an Owl player shooting into an open net.

Sophomore Rebecca Himelfarb (pictured above) tied her career high with 7 draw controls.
