Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Gains Split Behind Kunes, Cicchetti

The Muhlenberg softball team came back from an extra-inning loss to take the second game of its doubleheader against Haverford, 5-0.

Junior Raya Kunes pitched her third career shutout, allowing only three hits to a Haverford team that came into the day leading the Centennial Conference in batting. Kunes (pictured above) struck out only three but got 12 outs on ground balls and retired the Fords 1-2-3 in four of the seven innings.

Junior Sophia Cicchetti also had a banner game, going 4-for-4 with two triples and a double. The two triples gave her seven for the season, breaking a school record that had stood since 1987. Cicchetti also became the first Mule to have two triples in a game more than once, and also the first to have three extra-base hits in a game more than once in the same season.

Cicchetti led off the bottom of the first with her first triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Gillian Zack

Junior Dara DiMaiolo led off the third with a single up the middle, and Cicchetti followed with a double. Junior Jane Banahan, pinch-running for DiMaiolo, came around to score when the throw from the outfield got loose. The next batter, freshman Maddy Svenningsen, put down a bunt in front of the catcher, and Cicchetti slid in safely ahead of the tag to make it 3-0.

A double by DiMaiolo, Cicchetti's second triple and a single by Zack brought in two more runs in the fourth.

The first game was a marathon contest that went 10 innings. The Fords (16-17-1, 4-7-1) scored three times in the top of the 10th to break a 2-all tie and went on to win, 5-2.

The Mules (13-17, 4-8) answered a Haverford run in the top of the third with one of their own in the bottom of the inning. Cicchetti drew a two-out walk and went to second on a single by Svenningsen. Freshman Scooter Hulsen then hit a routine ground ball to second base, but the Ford fielder lost her glove as she transferred the ball to her throwing hand. Distracted, she threw too late to first to get Hulsen, and Cicchetti wheeled around to score.

After Haverford scored a single run in the top of the fourth, Muhlenberg plated the equalizer in the fifth, with junior Brianna Kessler leading off with a single and scoring on Hulsen's groundout.

The Mules advanced a runner to third in the sixth and seventh innings but could not score the tie-breaking run.

Cicchetti went 2-for-4 in the opener, giving her an even 100 hits for her career - 63 at Adelphi and 37 at Muhlenberg. Sophomore Justine Bergara went the distance, pitching all 10 innings.

Sophomore Kaya Mahy had a sensational day in the field, making three diving catches at third base, turning one into a double play.
