The Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team ran away in the second half to defeat Ursinus, 18-8, in a huge Centennial Conference game.
The Mules (9-3, 4-1) entered the game ranked 19th in Division III, while the Bears (6-5, 1-3), who have been ranked as high as 17th this season, were receiving votes. With three CC games remaining, Muhlenberg is tied for second place with Dickinson, the defending champion, and ninth-ranked Gettysburg, who will visit Scotty Wood Stadium for the Mules' home finale on Saturday.
Muhlenberg's 18 goals were one short of the school record for a CC game, set last year against Haverford. The Mules assisted on 13 of their 18 goals, setting a school record for a CC contest.Â
Senior
James Dalimonte scored 3 of the goals, including the 100th of his career. He is the third Muhlenberg player to reach the century mark.
Graduate student
Ethan Grossman and senior
Dominick Visintin scored 6 points apiece on 3 goals and 3 assists. Grossman now has 128 career assists, moving into second place on the CC all-time list (first place is 151). Visintin tied a career high with his 6 points.
Ursinus scored the first goal of the game, but Muhlenberg netted the next three, including two by junior
Wyatt Malia, and kept its lead for the remainder of the game. Most of the first half was close, however. It was 6-5 before senior
Jason Metz and Dalimonte netted back-to-back goals, but the Bears scored in the final minute of the half to send the teams into the break with the score 8-6.
The Mules outscored Ursinus 6-2 in the third quarter to stretch their lead, and for the second year in a row held the Bears without a goal in the final period.Â
Two of the defensive players got in on the offense in the fourth quarter with one senior defensive middie,
Andrew Sokolowski, scoring off a pass from another senior defensive middie,
Connor Riebling.
Senior
Max May made 12 saves in goal, and sophomore
Griffin Minuto went 15-for-27 on faceoffs with a career-high 9 ground balls.
