Runs were hard to come by in the Muhlenberg baseball doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark.
The Scarlet Raiders won both games by the same score, 2-1. Mule starting pitchers
Quinn Rovner and
Jayden Barroqueiro were sensational, combining to allow only 10 hits and no earned runs while striking out 13 in 12 innings.
Muhlenberg (7-9-1) scored in its first at-bat when junior
Jack Kent reached on an infield hit, stole second and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly by senior
Jake Swerdloff. The Mules would manage only one run in the remaining 15 innings, however.
Rutgers-Newark (13-4) walked off the first game on an error in the bottom of the seventh.
Barroqueiro
(pictured above) struck out a career-high 9 batters in the second game, including two with a runner on third to end the third. Muhlenberg took a 1-0 lead in the fifth after junior
Nick Whelan, playing his first game of the season, reached on a leadoff walk. He went to third on a single by junior
Ryan Riccio and scored on a forceout.
The Scarlet Raiders tied the game with an unearned run in the sixth and went ahead in the seventh. The Mules got one runner on in the eighth and two in the ninth but could not bring the tying run home.
