Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Splits First Florida DH

Three pitchers combined to allow only three earned runs as the Muhlenberg baseball team split with Springfield on its first day in Florida.

The Mules (4-3-1) came back to capture the nightcap, 4-2, after dropping the opener by a 2-1 score.

In the second game, sophomores Jayden Barroqueiro and Brendan Hughes combined on a four-hitter, striking out a total of 9. Barroqueiro was dominant in one stretch, fanning five consecutive batters - one short of the school record. Hughes relieved in the third and gave up a single to his first batter, bringing in two runners, but he was spotless after that, retiring the final 13 hitters he faced to pick up his second win of the season.

Muhlenberg manufactured a run in its first at-bat when junior Ryan Riccio singled, was sacrificed to second by junior Jack Kent, stole third and scored on a groundout by sophomore Aidan Legner.

The big hit of the game came in the bottom of the second with two outs and runners on second and third, and it was the first career hit for freshman Mason Mehling (pictured above), who lined a single to center to plate both runs and give the Mules a 3-0 lead.

Muhlenberg added an insurance run in the fifth when senior Caleb Tereska was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Senior Quinn Rovner was the tough-luck loser in the opener. He tossed a complete game for his third straight start of 6 innings with fewer than two earned runs allowed.

The Pride (1-2-1) scored its only two runs in the bottom of the second, and the score remained 2-0 until the top of the seventh. A single by Hughes, a pinch-hit single by junior Nick Stannard and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out. Kent brought in one run with a gritty at-bat in which he fouled off three two-strike pitches before finally walking, but the next two hitters could net get the tying run home.
