Game Recap: Baseball |

Bats Quiet as Baseball Drops Two

The Muhlenberg baseball team managed only three runs and eight hits in dropping a doubleheader to Marymount, 6-2 and 6-1.

The Mules (4-5-1) took the early lead in the opener thanks to aggressive baserunning. Junior Ryan Riccio led off the game with a walk, went to second when junior Jack Kent was hit by a pitch, then stole third and home.

Kent doubled with two outs in the third, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. The Saints (9-3) came back with five runs in the bottom of the third, though, and went on to win 6-2.

Freshman Evan Virno pitched two scoreless innings in relief to finish out the game.

Marymount got the early jump in the nightcap with two runs in the top of the first. Muhlenberg got a run back in the bottom of the inning on singles by Riccio and sophomore Brendan Hughes, sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt, but the Saints did not allow any more scoring in their 6-1 win.

Riccio and Hughes combined for four of the Mules' five hits.

The Mules got some solid work out of the bullpen in the nightcap. Senior Zach Sager (pictured above) relieved in an emergency in the first inning and pitched three innings, allowing only one hit and one run. Sophomore Ethan Brochin had the best outing of his career, striking out 5 in 2.1 innings.

Senior Ben Kollender worked a 1-2-3 seventh.
