Junior
Ava Connolly hit a jumper with eight-tenths of a second remaining to give the Muhlenberg women's basketball team a thrilling 50-49 win at Ursinus.
The victory sent the Mules, who are not scheduled to play for another four weeks, into the holiday break with an 8-3 record - their best after 11 games in five years.
Neither team led by more than eight points in the closely contested game, and the biggest advantage in the fourth quarter was four points. Muhlenberg led 46-42 after junior
Jenna Stockfeder hit a baseline jumper with 3:02 remaining, but the Bears (6-3, 3-3) scored the next five points to take a 47-46 edge with less than two minutes to play.
An exchange of jumpers left Ursinus up by a point heading into the game's final minute. It was still 49-48 when the Mules took possession on a defensive rebound with 15.8 ticks left.
Ursinus had two fouls to give and gave both, leaving Muhlenberg with a side out-of-bounds play with 4.2 seconds showing. Connolly took the inbounds pass in the corner, dribbled twice to her left and sunk a 17-footer.Â
The Bears called timeout and advanced the ball to halfcourt, but the Mules defended well and forced a tough three-point attempt at the buzzer that was not close.
The one-point win was the first for the Mules since the 2014-15 season, when they edged Gettysburg, 47-46. The last time Muhlenberg won in the final second was just last year, when
Emily Unger made a shot with eight-tenths of a second left for a 59-57 win against Gettysburg.
Connolly led Muhlenberg with 13 points, while junior
Rachel Saxton added 12, including seven of the Mules' 11 fourth-quarter points. Stockfeder (13) and senior
Caroline Horst (
