Football Walks Off with OT Win

For the second straight week, the Muhlenberg football team played a game that was decided on the final snap. This time, the result was more pleasing.

Senior James Nye caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from junior Joe Repetti in the second overtime to give the 22nd-ranked Mules (8-1, 5-1) a wild 48-45 win against Franklin & Marshall in their final scheduled home game and last Centennial Conference game of the season.

It was only the second multiple-overtime game in program history (Muhlenberg won the other one too, 41-35 at Juniata in 2015), and the 93 combined points were just three short of the school record set in a 56-40 win against Juniata in 2017.

Repetti set a school record by contributing to all seven Mule touchdowns, passing for five and rushing for the other two. He completed 34 passes, one short of the school record, for a career-high 386 yards, the eighth-best single-game passing performance by a Muhlenberg QB. Repetti also rushed for a game-high 76 yards, setting another school record with 462 yards of total offense, topping the mark of 457 set in 1999.

Nye hauled in 11 passes, tying the school record for a tight end, for 148 yards and a pair of scores. His 12 touchdowns this season are just three shy of the school record.

Nye's sensational one-handed catch for an 18-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter was one of the highlights of a first half that saw the Mules open up a 21-7 lead. But the Diplomats (6-3, 2-3) scored the next three touchdowns, two in a disastrous third quarter in which Muhlenberg failed to gain a first down.

F&M took a 35-28 lead with 5:06 left in regulation, and after the Mules were stopped on downs with 2:35 remaining, the outlook did not look promising. But the defense forced a punt, and Muhlenberg got the ball back with 1:17 showing on the clock.

It took Repetti just six plays to lead the Mules 80 yards down the field for the tying touchdown, a 35-yard strike to senior Christopher Ardito with 35 ticks on the clock.

The Diplomats took a knee following the kickoff, sending the game into overtime.

Muhlenberg had the first possession, and a short possession it was. Repetti hit Ardito with a touchdown pass for the second straight play, giving the Mules a 42-35 lead.

Ardito finished with seven catches for 102 yards for his second career 100-yard game.

The Mules appeared to have stopped the Diplomats on fourth down on their possession in the first overtime, but a penalty for pass interference in the end zone set up the tying touchdown.

F&M took the ball first in the second overtime and gained 6 yards in three plays before settling for a 36-yard field goal to take a 45-42 lead.

Repetti hit senior Matt McKenna for a 17-yard gain to the F&M 8 on Muhlenberg's first play of the second overtime. Four plays later, Nye's catch in the back of the end zone ended the thriller.

Senior John Lohrer picked off a pass andd broke up two others, moving to within one of tying the school record of 13 pass breakups in a season. Senior Keshon Davila registered 2½ tackles for loss, while senior Matt Papa (pictured above) and sophomore Blaze Curry had a pair each.
