Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Gee! Men's Basketball Wins Big

The "G" Squad propelled the Muhlenberg men's basketball team to an 80-55 home win against McDaniel.

With a starting lineup of Giovanni, Gordos, Gaines, Goldberg and Gillikin, the Mules (8-4, 3-2) shot 63.3 percent from the field en route to their biggest margin of victory of the season. It was the first time Muhlenberg shot better than 60 percent from the field in 15 years, since making shots at a .608 clip in an 86-54 home win against McDaniel.

Junior Giovanni Rubino followed up his 31-point performance in Wednesday's loss to Franklin & Marshall by pouring in 19 of 7-of-8 shooting in only 22 minutes. Junior Brandon Goldberg, making his first career start, scored 13 points on perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the field, and sophomore Charlie Gillikin, also making his first career start, added 9 points.

Sophomore Jayson Williams-Johnson came off the bench to score 10. Graduate student Dan Gaines finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, moving past 1,200 points for his career.

With Goldberg (pictured above) making three baskets and assisting on a fourth, Muhlenberg jumped out to an 11-2 lead. The Green Terror (5-5, 2-3) was within eight points at 13-5 before the Mules reeled off the next 10 to make it 23-5.

The outcome was never in doubt after that. Muhlenberg led by 25 points, 43-18, at halftime, and increased its margin to as many as 37 points, 73-36, on a three by Williams-Johnson midway through the second half.

The big lead allowed the Mules, who have three games (including two long road trips) this coming week, to rest their regulars and give some of their younger players court time in the latter stages of the game. Freshman Matt Lee made a three-pointer for his first career points, and sophomore Connor Rushing hit a three for his first points of the season.
