Emily Unger with eight-tenths of a second remaining gave the Muhlenberg women's basketball team a big 59-57 home win against Gettysburg.
The dramatic victory gave the Mules (9-10, 8-6) a two-game lead over Swarthmore in the race for the final Centennial Conference playoff spot with three weeks left in the regular season. And it came against one of the hottest teams in the CC, a Bullet squad that had won seven straight to vault into second place.
Muhlenberg led for almost the entire game, but Gettysburg rallied from a 12-point third-quarter deficit to take a 53-52 lead with 2:12 to play.
The Bullets (12-6, 9-4) led 55-53 before Unger banked in a three from the top of the key with 35.8 seconds on the clock.
Sophomore
Emily Vaughan made one of two free throws with 13.1 ticks showing, but Gettysburg tied the score at 57-all with 9.0 seconds remaining.
The Mules inbounded the ball at halfcourt, and with the seconds ticking down, Unger took a pass, dribbled twice to her right and tossed the ball up and in with her right hand.
Gettysburg tried a tip play after calling timeout, to no avail, and Muhlenberg had its first win against the Bullets since the 2017 CC championship game.
Unger finished with a team-leading 13 points, while graduate student
Margaux Eripret finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds, scoring in double figures for the 12th straight home game. Junior
Caroline Horst narrowly missed her first career double-double, recording 9 points and 10 rebounds.
A pair of threes by Vaughan in the early going helped stake the Mules to a 17-9 lead. They finished the first quarter with 21 points against a Gettysburg squad that entered the game 13th in Division III in scoring defense.
For most of the game, the Bullets threatened the lead, only to have Muhlenberg extend it whenever they got close. The Mules took a 50-41 advantage into the fourth but did not score in the first six minutes of the final period, and Gettysburg finally caught up.
Vaughan and junior
Abigail Scheidel scored 7 points apiece, and sophomore
Megan Winters tied her career high with 6 points.
