Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Swept After Fast Start

The Muhlenberg baseball team scored twice in its first at-bat but struggled on offense the rest of the day in a doubleheader loss at Franklin & Marshall.

The first-place Diplomats (14-10, 5-0) held the Mules (11-11, 0-5) to 11 total hits in winning the first game, 7-2, and the nightcap, 4-1.

Senior Danny Monzo gave Muhlenberg a 2-0 lead four batters into the opening game with his first career home run, a no-doubter blast down the right-field line. The Mules had a chance to extend their lead, with runners on second and third with nobody out in the second, but could not cash in.

F&M scored two unearned runs in the fifth to take its first lead and tacked on four runs in its final two at-bats.

In the nightcap, Muhlenberg trailed 3-0 through seven despite a strong start by senior Evan Spano (pictured above), who allowed only two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Senior Ryan Hebert singled in junior Caleb Tereska to get the Mules on the board in the eighth, but the inning ended with the tying runs in scoring position.

Tereska had two hits and two stolen bases in the twinbill, and junior Christian Schwarz recorded a pair of hits in each game.

Two notable streaks came to an end in the second game. Freshman Aidan Legner singled in the first game to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, but that number proved unlucky as he went 0-for-3 in the nightcap. And senior Thomas Rodgers made a throwing error on a stolen base in the bottom of the eighth, ending his streeak of 272 consecutive errorless chances.
