For one day, at least, it was good for the Muhlenberg softball team to be at home.
The Mules (13-15) extended their winning streak to five with a sweep of Centenary, winning 9-1 twice in their long-awaited first home games of the season. The second game was finished in a steady rain, the start of a storm that forced Muhlenberg to move the second of its back-to-back scheduled home doubleheaders away to Haverford.Â
Both games against Centenary followed similar scripts, with the Mules allowing a run in the top of the first but ultimately winning by the eight-run run with late offense.
In the opener, the Cyclones (4-19) led 1-0 before senior
Madison Palat delivered a game-tying single in the second. Doubles by senior
Sarah Karmazyn, sophomore
Gillian Zack and senior
Kristin Oberg contributed to a four-run third that gave Muhlenberg a 5-1 lead.
Three consecutive two-out hits - a two-run single by Zack, a single by freshman
Kaya Mahy and a two-run double by senior
Sarah Raab - produced four runs in the fourth.
Raab
(pictured above) pitched a hitless fourth in relief of sophomore
Raya Kunes, who allowed only two hits in three innings, to earn the win, and sophomore
Isabella Fogle retired the side in the fifth to finish off the game.
Muhlenberg's bats were stymied in the nightcap for the first five innings before erupting for nine runs in the sixth. The score was tied 1-1 with two outs in the sixth, but Centenary never got that third out, as nine straight Mules reached base by hit or walk.
Just two days after tying a school record with two home runs in a game, Zack achieved another rarity with two hits in the same inning. She singled in the tying run in her first at-bat and added another single later, completing her 5-for-7 day at the plate.
Palat had another clutch hit, dropping a single into center field to bring in the go-ahead run. A bases-clearing triple by senior
Natalie Smith broke the game open, and Karmazyn added a two-run double in her second at-bat of the frame.
Run-scoring singles by senior
Genna Cicchetti and Mahy brought the inning - and game - to a close.
Freshman
Justine Bergara tossed a complete-game five-hitter in picking up her fourth win of the season.Â
