The Muhlenberg baseball team came into Coca-Cola Park willing to go to great lengths to win a game.
And that's just what the Mules did, scoring a run in the bottom of the 13th to defeat Ursinus, 4-3, and snap their 10-game losing streak.
Although the Mules won a 14-inning game on the road at Gettysburg in 2019, they hadn't walked off with a win in a game that long since 1973, when they beat Johns Hopkins in 13 innings.
The marathon game ended on an unusual play. With junior
Caleb Tereska on first and two outs in the 13th, senior
Thomas Rodgers looped a single into shallow center. Tereska wheeled around second and headed for third, and he was awarded home plate when the throw from the outfield went into the Muhlenberg dugout.Â
Above, Tereska celebrates the winning run with junior
Ben Kollender.
Freshman
Brendan Hughes earned the win, the first of his career, with three innings of scoreless relief. He struck out three and allowed four hits but was helped out by his defense in each inning. In the 11th, Hughes hopped off the mound quickly to throw out a runner at third on a sacrifice attempt. In the 12th, Rodgers threw out a runner attempting to steal for the second time in the game. And Kollender made a diving catch of a line drive at first base with runners on the corners to end the top of the 13th.Â
That was typical of the game, which featured many scoring opportunities but few runs. The teams combined to leave 35 runners on base.
Muhlenberg (12-14, 1-7) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out RBI single by senior
Trevor Virno. After Ursinus tied the scored in the fourth, the Mules took another one-run lead in the sixth when sophomore
Nick Belli drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Bears (9-16, 2-4) tied the game again with an unearned run in the top of the seventh. Sophomore
Jonathan Toth untied it when he led off the bottom of the seventh with his ninth home run of the season, tying the 40-year-old school record for a shortstop.
The score remained 3-2 until Ursinus hit a two-out, game-tying single in the top of the ninth.
Senior
Will Nomura pitched six innings in relief for the Mules, allowing only one earned run.
Tereska, Rodgers and seniors
Ryan Gilbert and
Ryan Hebert all had two hits for the Mules. Hebert reached base in five of his seven plate appearances.Â
