Game Recap: Softball |

Home Run, Comeback Not Enough for Softball

The Muhlenberg softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games at Stockton, 8-7 in eight innings and 2-0.

In the opener, the Mules (8-14) staged a dramatic rally in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Trailing 7-2 at the start of the inning, Muhlenberg plated two runs on back-to-back two-out RBI singles by sophomore Gillian Zack and senior Madison Palat. After a single by senior Sarah Raab and a walk to sophomore Sabrina Reichelt loaded the bases, a dropped fly ball allowed all three runners to score, tying the game at 7-7.

The Mules had runners on second and third with nobody out in the top of the eighth but could not score, and the Ospreys (12-10) walked it off in the bottom of the inning.

Muhlenberg's first two runs came in the third on the first career home run for senior Kristin Oberg (pictured above), who became the fifth different Mule to belt a four-bagger this year. That matches the most since 2013, when six different Mules hit home runs.

After the high-scoring opener, the second game was all about pitching. Sophomore Raya Kunes tossed a complete-game three-hitter but was the tough-luck loser.

Zack was 3-for-3 and was one of two Muhlenberg players to reach scoring position when she doubled in the seventh. Senior Genna Cicchetti, who doubled in the sixth, was the other.
