The Muhlenberg baseball team exhibited a strong first inning at Scranton, bringing in two runs on three hits, but ultimately suffered a loss, 14-4.
The Mules (11-5) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI double to left center field from freshman Aidan Legner to bring home senior Ryan Hebert. Then, following sophomore Jonathan Toth's single to center field, the Mules hit into a double play to score Legner and double their advantage.
The Royals (13-3-1), who received a vote in this week's D3baseball.com top 25, evened the score in the bottom of the inning and added multiple runs in the second and fourth.
Muhlenberg would be held off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth inning, when Hebert reached on fielder's choice and drove home junior Ben Kollender to cut the Scranton lead to 7-3.Â
The Mules added one final run in the eighth inning as junior Jake Swerdloff singled in between first and second, allowing sophomore Jake Braet to cross the plate.Â
Toth, coming off a historic three-homer performance against New Jersey City, extended his streak of hits in consecutive plate appearances to seven by singling to lead off the fourth. He was hit by pitch his next time up and finally retired on a fly ball in the eighth.
