The Muhlenberg baseball team was swept by Gettysburg in its first Centennial Conference games of 2022, 6-5 and 9-8.
The Bullets (11-11, 2-0) scored the winning run in the seventh inning of the opener and rallied from a 6-0 deficit to capture the nightcap.
In the first game, the Mules (11-7, 0-2) overcame an early 5-1 hole with a four-run fifth in which seven straight batters reached base after two were out and nobody on. Juniors
Christian Schwarz and
Jake Swerdloff hit RBI singles, a third run scored on a wild pitch, and sophomore
Jake Braet tied the game with an RBI double.
Gettysburg went back ahead with an unearned run in the top of the seventh, and Muhlenberg could not manage a hit in the final three innings.
The Mules came out smoking in the second game, scoring twice in the first and four times in the second. Sophomore
Jonathan Toth doubled in the first run of the game and scored on a single by senior
Danny Monzo.
In the second, freshman
Aidan Legner singled in a run, Toth brought in another with his second double, and Monzo capped the rally with a two-run single.
Junior
Quinn Rovner, aiming to become the first Muhlenberg pitcher in 43 years to open a season with six straight wins, set down the first nine Bullet hitters he faced, but a pair of home runs got Gettysburg back in the game. The Mules led 7-6 in the seventh before junior
Caleb Tereska singled in an insurance run, but it was not enough insurance. Gettysburg scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead for the first time.Â
Muhlenberg put the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the ninth, but they were stranded.
Monzo
(pictured above) finished with three hits and four RBI. Toth reached base in all five plate appearances, with three hits and two walks.Â
