Game Recap: Baseball |

Hail! Hail! Toth Homers Thrice

Sophomore Jonathan Toth tied a school record by homering three times in a 19-5 home win for the Muhlenberg baseball team against New Jersey City.

On a day that featured wind, rain, sunshine and even some frozen precipitation, Toth proved to be a man for all seasons, hitting a three-run home in the first, a two-run shot in the second and a solo blast in the fourth. He is the third Mule player to hit three homers in a game.

Toth, who homered in his final at-bat against Eastern on Friday, ended his streak of home runs in four straight at-bats with a mere RBI single in the fifth. He finished 4-for-4 with seven RBI, one short of the school record for a single game. Toth did set a school record with 13 total bases. His seven home runs this season are already tied for fifth-most on the program's all-time list, two short of the school record for a shortstop.

Toth had company in the long ball department as the Mules (11-4) tied a school record with five round-trippers. Senior Ryan Hebert hit his first career home-run, a three-run blast in the second, and senior Thomas Rodgers also connected in the second.

The long balls supported the pitching of junior Quinn Rovner, who struck out a career-high 11 batters in a six-inning stint to win his fifth straight start.

Muhlenberg had a 3-0 lead after three batters, with Toth's first home run following singles by Hebert and freshman Aidan Legner. After sophomore Jack Kent singled in a run in the second, the round-trippers by Hebert, Toth and Rodgers gave the Mules an eight-run inning and an 11-0 lead.

Hebert added an RBI double in the fifth and finished 3-for-4 with four RBI out of the leadoff spot. Junior Jake Swerdloff also went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Legner scored three runs.

Junior Zach Sager drove in a run with his first career hit, a pinch-hit single, in the seventh.
