The Muhlenberg softball team wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a pair of games at Salisbury.
The Mules (5-7) sandwiched games against some of the top teams in Division III around three days in Myrtle Beach, where they won five of six games. Muhlenberg played Christopher Newport and Virginia Wesleyan at the start of the week and Salisbury at the end - those are three of the top four ranked teams in Division III. Ithaca, the Mules' other opponent at Salisbury, is a traditional powerhouse that was 25-8 last year.
Ithaca scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opening game. Freshman
Justine Bergara came on in relief and calmed the storm, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing only one run while striking out a career-high seven. Bergara struck out the side in the second, her first complete inning, but the offense could muster only one baserunner in the game.
The bats were similarly stymied against No. 2- ranked Salisbury, which has not given up a run in its last five games. Muhlenberg got two runners to second base but could not bring them home in the 4-0 loss.
Senior
Cora Bridgers kept the Mules in the game with a complete-game effort in which she struck out six, including one with the bases loaded to end the second inning. It was 2-0 before the Sea Gulls doubled their lead with a two-run homer in the fifth.Â
