The Muhlenberg softball team scored 10 runs in the final two innings to come from behind and defeat SUNY Poly, 13-5.
In their second game of the day in Myrtle Beach, the Mules (3-5) fell to Medaille, 7-3.
The opening game featured a record performance by senior
Sarah Karmazyn, who tied a school record for hits in a game by going 4-for-4. She finished a home run short of the cycle.
Muhlenberg trailed 5-3 after three innings and one rain delay. Sophomore
Kersti Svenningsen led off the fourth with a double, and one out later, sophomore
Gillian Zack, Karmazyn and freshman
Kaitlyn Buurman delivered consecutive run-scoring hits to give the Mules the lead. A fourth run scored when a hard single down the line by senior Geenna Cicchetti was misplayed in left.
The Mules added to their lead in the fifth, putting their first four runners on without hitting the ball past the pitching circle. A bunt single by sophomore
Jane Banahan and a fielder's choice on a bunt in front of the catcher by freshman
Ava Calabrese, combined with two walks, brought in the first run of the inning. After a second run came in on a wild pitch, Muhlenberg began hitting the ball to the outfield.
Karmazyn
(pictured above) hit a two-run single and advanced to third on a single up the middle by Buurman. Freshman
Kaya Mahy and Cicchetti closed out the rally with back-to-back sacrifice flies, giving the Mules the eight-run lead they needed to end the game by retiring the Wildcats in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman
Justine Bergara took care of that, striking out the side to wrap up her first career win and a complete-game five-hitter.
Muhlenberg's hot bats carried over to the second game. Sophomore
Samantha Winegard hit a two-run double in the first, and senior
Kristin Oberg singled in a run in the second. But the offense was silenced for the rest of the game.
Bergara came on in relief to pitch five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.
